I am running as a Green-endorsed candidate because I believe strongly in the Four Pillars of the Green Party: social and economic justice, grassroots democracy, non-violence, and ecological wisdom. Every party has a platform (which can change) but no other party leads with its values in this way. (The Independence Party has a list of key characteristics, but they include things like "integrity," which doesn't tell you a thing about how they might govern. Every candidate should have integrity). Click here to read "The Green Party's Vision for St. Paul, 2005–2025." So my running as a Green is not a reaction against any other party. It is a response on behalf of values I believe must be strongly represented in the world. Some of my many DFL friends told me they had hoped I would run as a DFL candidate. I accept that as a compliment. I believe I would be a strong and viable candidate for any party. However, the St. Paul mayoral race is a local, non-partisan race. Party affiliation does not even appear on the primary ballot. This is a really safe way to vote for the most progressive candidate — who in this race happens to be Green. For those of you who are concerned about the 2004 presidential elections: I share your concern. I have never voted a straight Green Party ticket. Most Green Party members I know do not vote a straight Green Party ticket either. Many of those who do would not vote for anyone if there were not an alternative to the two main parties. That is their right.
