Green Party Candidate |
For Immediate Release August 26, 2005
Dickinson Gains Endorsement of MN NOW St. Paul, MN – Friday, August 26, 2005 – Mayoral candidate Elizabeth Dickinson this week was endorsed by the political arm of Minnesota NOW, the state's chapter of the National Organization for Women. MN NOW was formed in 1971; the group's web site defines it as a "grassroots advocate working for women's rights in Minnesota," and focusing on a full range of related issues. Candidate endorsement is carried out by a separate political action committee (PAC). Dickinson welcomed the group's backing, noting that she had been endorsed by NOW in her 2003 run for St. Paul city council and she "greatly appreciate[s] the support then and now." She added that her efforts will benefit significantly from the ability to interact with NOW's membership. Her campaign accepts no financial support from PACs, she said — a donation check accompanying the endorsement letter will be returned — but she and her staff will contact NOW members individually to ask for their help and for donations. In the endorsement letter delivered to the Dickinson campaign, the NOW PAC chair noted that the endorsement "recognizes [Dickinson's] leadership on feminist issues." The Minnesota NOW PAC was established in 1982 to work for the election of feminist women and men at the local and state level; it recognizes candidates based on their promotion of a list of a half-dozen organizational priorities ranging from ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment to opposing punitive welfare reform. PAC members represent each of Minnesota's eight congressional districts. Dickinson had previously received the unanimous endorsement of the Green Party of St. Paul, and the backing of the MN Women's Political Caucus. She is a past co-chair of the local branch of the Greens, who — with units in more than 75 countries — comprise the world's largest political party. More information on MN NOW and its endorsement can be obtained by contacting the organization's St. Paul office at (651) 222-1605, or by emailing info[at]mnnow.org or visiting the group's web site at www.mnnow.org; chair of the group's Political Action Committee is Beth Anderson.
